History of Angus and Mary MacPherson
In 1801, Angus MacPherson was 18 when he decided there was nothing left for him in Scotland. Being the fifth son of his father, he knew there would never be a place of leadership within the clan. The woman he loved had been betrothed to an older man by her wealthy father. Taking his bagpipes, his Scottish kilt, his clan shield, and a bag of gold coins from his father, Angus headed for the coast to book passage on the next ship to America.
Mary Campbell had loved Angus since they were children. When Angus left, she was determined to follow him. With her mother’s blessing, her jewelry and wedding veil, Mary headed for the Scottish port and the ship that would take away her beloved.
Overcoming several trials and difficulties, Angus and Mary married on board ship. When they reached America, they slowly made their way westward as the country expanded. During these years, Angus and Mary had nine sons and three daughters. Their children found love and spouses, as they moved from New York to Pennsylvania, to Kansas, and lastly to the Colorado Territory. Along the way, as each of her children married, Mary placed her mother’s wedding veil on the heads of her daughters and daughters-in-law as more were added to the family. The tradition carried on to the grandchildren who married with “Granny“ MacPherson in attendance.
At last count, Angus and Mary MacPherson had twelve children, eighty-nine grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren, with more on the way.
