WORBLY’S FAMILY MONTHLY MAGAZINE

Before I published my first set of books, I created a historical magazine and dated it 150 years in the past. I titled it Worbly’s Family Monthly Magazine. It was somewhat like a Reader’s Digest of the mid-19th Century.  I loved researching on Google Books and finding all sort of things to put in the magazine. Everything, except the Letters to the Editor, Manners Matter column, and some of the advertisements, was taken right out of the books and magazines had been published prior to the date I had on my magazine (1865-1870). The only changes I made were to some of the grammar that looked more like typos today. Although looking back at some of the editions, there are actually typos that I didn’t catch.

I know some of the readers of this post subscribed to the magazine when it I originally published it. Some of you haven’t seen it yet. If you would like to see stories, recipes, hints, how-to make things, and a variety of other things from the 1860s, please check out the magazine at

By the way, since this is a blog about my MacPhersons, let me tell you that James Worbly who founded and published the magazine for many years was married to Anice MacPherson, daughter of Angus and Mary MacPherson. In The Heart Forgets, Kerr escorts Lucy to St. Louis, and they stay at the home of his aunt Anice. Also, I plan to write the stories of the three Worbly sisters for the MacPherson Brides.
